How do I know if I can upgrade my memory?

I have 512 mb ram, I want at least 1gb of ram. How do I go and do that? How do I know if I can upgrade my memory?
first off, u need to find out if u have ddr2 ram, ddr ram or the old sd ram, if u got a p4, most likley its ddr ram, then just buy extra sticks of that ram,How do I know if I can upgrade my memory?
Quickest %26 easiest way is to go to Crucial.com and let them scan you computer.

The whole point of the scan is that it tells you exactly what you need and even gives you the product to buy (from their site)Why do you need OUR help?
the three brands of RAM i have used in my more recent builds are G.Skill, OCZ, and Crucial. I have never had problems with any of them, with my budget build way back when Socket 754 was new, i used cheap Samsung RAM and never had problems with that either. it really comes down to getting another stick that will be the same speed as the other stick, and similar timings. if one stick is DDR333 and the other is DDR400, the 400 will clock its self down to 333 speeds.
Yup looks like you got an open slot. You can do one of a few things....Get another 512MB stick and have 1GB total (in dual channel if mobo supports it)Get a 1 GB stick and have 1.5GB in single channelGet rid of the 512 stick and get 2x1GB sticks The first option is probably your best bet. If you don't mind doing rebates this is a pretty good deal.

I copied and pasted a reply I got from SiKH22...''Good memory brans are Corsiar, OCZ, Muskin(sorry for spelling), GIEL''
so you're saying i can get any 512 memory for my computer. it doesn't have to be the same brand as the other memory ram? and insert it? do i have to install drivers for RAM?is this good?http://e3wwwtest.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?item=N82E16820145529i already have 512 mb so add this and i will have 1gb.

It will but that brand is not known. And the brand quality is what matters you dont want it to crap out on you. You can go with that no namer and have a chance of it crapping out or get a name brand with a warrenty.
