Lag or actually bad frame rate in this case isn't something you want to improve, it's something you want to get rid of. If it's already 'lagging', I wouldn't recommend going higher than 800x600, and it really depends on the GPU. How much FPS loss due to changing Resolution?
but does changing the resolution help to improve the frame rates, iam pretty sure it does right? cause all those benchmarks show it higher on lower resolution

yeah i know but when i change the resolution from 800x600 to 1024x768 in BF 2 i dont really notice a difference? i only notice it in on desktop.

You have to change the resolution ingame, not from the desktop. You only change the resolution for you desktop and their applications. Go to teh Video Options while playing BF2 and change the resolution there.
no i mean i do change it in game, iam saying i only notice the resolution on the desktop. never in game for some reason
Well do you use an LCD then? On thoses you're supposed to run it at the native resolution.
