if it matters its an intel pentium 4i'm looking to buy a new procesor for my pc....
if it matters its an intel pentium 4
we need to know the socket type, and your motherboard chipset. download CPU-Z onto your computer from CPUID.com
Heres a copy of what it said
We need to know what it says in the mainboard section as well.
here it is:
Im not sure it can support anything more than a pentium D
since it's LGA775, i'm sure you can get a core 2 duo processor, they are much better
since it's LGA775, i'm sure you can get a core 2 duo processor, they are much better
you cant get a core 2 duo just because you have a socket LGA 775. you need the right chipset. at least a 945 based chipset
Intel's i925x chipset only supports Pentium 4s.
Intel's i925x chipset only supports Pentium 4s.
really? cuz i thought it supported pentium Ds
You'll have to swap out your motherboard, preferrably to a P35 chipset based board. Then you can get this CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116036
Dirt cheap, based on the Core 2 architecture and it overclocks crazily (3GHz on stock cooling is what most people have there's at).
Wouldn't you need to kill the BIOS since it is a Dell as well?
not to hijack this thread or anything but I have a i945p chipset so what's the highest I can get.

Of course. That Conroe based Pentium D-C will run circles around your Pentium 4.But, looking at your Dell, I'm not even sure that you're able to replace the motherboard. Dell uses a different form factor for their PCs to stop modding and upgrading, so swapping out the motherboard into your case seems impossible (unless you go for a BTX mobo).Do you mind fully listing the parts that your Dell has?
not to hijack this thread or anything but I have a i945p chipset so what's the highest I can get.
What motherboard model is it?Some later 945P motherboards have fixed the voltage delivery system for Core 2 based processors.http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/945p/index.htm

It says I have a smithfield. I thought the pentium d 's were supposed to be prescotts is mine worse?
I'll research that motherboard of your's, but first, there were two designs of the Pentium D. Both were based off of Prescott, so they both sucked :PSmithfield was the 90nm 2 x 1MB L2 cache version of the Pentium D. It was originally run at the 533MHz system bus speed and this of course was a bottleneck for the two cores. What's interesting is that the Smithfield cores weren't even seperated off the the silicon wafer, following Intel MCM approach to multicore processing. Maybe Intel got too lazy?
Presleris the 65nm version of the Pentium D featuring 2x2MB of L2 cache. It also features an 800MHz FSB, and the Extreme Edition cores had an 1066MHz FSB. It ran cooler than Smithfield but was still considered power consuming and too hot when compared to the Athlon X2s.

So can someone who is good with computers research what processors are compatiable with my current motherboard and tell me how much better it will run games and if i absoulutly have to replace my motehr baord how much will it cost. (i'll hjave best buy geek squad install it for me :) )
